Pre-K Half Day Curriculum
Introduction:
When the students arrive in Pre-K, they are already familiar with the classroom environment and its rules. Now it is time to develop new skills that will help them to succeed in their future academic careers. In our Pre-K class, the students begin to write their letters and numbers independently, and we focus heavily on preparing them for phonics and writing.
Islamic Studies:
In Islamic Studies the students will listen to stories of various Prophets and then do activities that reinforce the themes of the stories. The students will also participate in projects to develop a sense of the importance of giving, and other important Islamic concepts.
Quran Memorization:
The students will memorize the following surahs:
· Surah Fatiha
· Surah Asr
· Surah Kauther
· Surah Masad
· Surah Ikhlas
· Surah Naas
Quran Reading:
By the end of the academic year, students will be able to recognize the Arabic letters with the corresponding sounds.
They will be able to recognize letters that are in the beginning, middle and at the end of a word. They will also be able to recognize the harakaats (faatha, kasra & damma) and the corresponding sounds.
Dua’s:
The students will learn the following duas pertaining to their daily activities:
· Dua’ when they wake up in the morning
· Dua’before sleeping
· Dua’ before eating
· Dua’ after eating
· Dua’ before using the restroom
· Dua’ before studying
· Dua’when leaving the home
Arabic:
By the end of the school year, the students will recognize the letters of the Arabic alphabet, and will also be able to write some of the letters independently. They will also be introduced to Arabic numbers from 1-10. One of our objectives this year is that the students should begin to read the Quran independently. All the students will probably not reach this goal. However, some of the students will begin reading the before the end of the school year Inshallah.
Math:
The students will focus on counting to 20 and writing numbers from 1-20. Not only will they be able to write them, but also they will understand the value of each number. For example, rather than just being able to write the number “11”,the students will understand that eleven comes after ten, and is therefore greater than ten. Although our main focus is on number sense and writing numbers from 1-20 independently, we will introduce the students to the concept of addition and begin model addition in the second semester of the school year.
Language Arts:
Our Pre-K Language Arts curriculum creates a strong foundation for reading and writing. Therefore, the emphasis will be on recognizing and writing both the upper case and lower case letters of the English alphabet. The students will explore the formation of the letters through a variety of activities, such as collages, cut-and-paste activities, writing worksheets, etc.
As the students begin to write the letters independently, we will introduce them to the sounds of the letters. The students will not be expected to learn all the sounds, nor will they begin to blend sounds into words. However, we will introduce them to the concept that each letter has a sound, and that words with a similar sound being with that letter when written.
